Watch or listen…
So, what is the Harvest?
In church culture, it is witnessing to others, sharing our faith, and evangelism. Some of you might be wrestling with images of knocking on people’s doors, or preaching in the streets, while those might be ways to bring in a harvest of people, it’s not the whole picture. Just as our bodies have many parts and each part has a special function, so it is with Christ’s body. We are many parts of one body, and we all belong to each other. Not all of us are evangelists but we all still have a role to play in the harvest. Whether you are a planter, a waterer, or a harvester, your role is personal and valuable to the harvest.
Key Passage: John 4:35-36 (NLT)
“You know the saying, ‘Four months between planting and harvest.’ But I say, wake up and look around. The fields are already ripe for harvest. The harvesters are paid good wages, & the fruit they harvest is people brought to eternal life. What joy awaits both the planter and the harvester alike!”
Wake up & look around!
After ministering to the Samaritan woman (who ran and brought the whole town), Jesus told His disciples to watch what was about to happen. I could say the same for today, God is ready to do something amazing in the world. We need to be awake and ready. The problem is that there are some who are asleep and may not realize it.
How do you know if you are asleep? Pinch yourself – are you dreaming?
First, for the disciples to be ready, they needed to see the harvest and that happened from one seed. Jesus wanted them to see Him at work by exposing what may have offended them in order to break down any personal barriers so they could see more of Jesus. When we see more of Him, we see His people and we become ready for the harvest.
Q: Submit yourself to God and allow Him to expose anything that offends you. Be honest, it’s between you and Him. In what areas of your life do you need to be more awake? What can you see God doing in these areas?
Positioning yourself in Christ
If God’s plan for us is to decrease, what do you think the enemy’s plan is? The Opposite!
I think the enemy has been working overtime on a master plan that causes us to become the center of our own universe rather than God. It’s not that people are being stingy or nasty, it’s that everything is about them.
- Live the American Dream – become successful
- Whatever you put your mind to = be all you can be
- Better, faster, stronger, smarter
We are competing from the time we hit grade school and our society promotes it. We all know there is healthy competition. But when we live our lives based on doing better and being better than others, we miss the harvest completely.
There are some extremely hard truths in a documentary on Social Media called Social Dilemma. If you watch it, just know there is some bias in it. Since the introduction of Social Media there has been an increase in suicide and self-harm. Suicide rates in girls age 15-19 is up 70% while ages 10-14 is up 151%. Self-Harm in girls 15-19 is up 62% and with ages 10-14 up 189%.
Constant comparison to others – seeking immediate approval causes us to become more inward-focused (self-seeking) than outward. Seeking joy from ourselves leads nowhere. True joy is found when you focus on others.
Q: What was the last prayer you prayed? When was the last time you served? Why are you here/online today?
Gods plan to bring in the harvest
Romans 10:13-15 tells us, “Everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved. “But how can they call on Him to save them unless they believe in Him? And how can they believe in Him if they have never heard about Him? And how can they Hear about him, unless someone tells them? And how will anyone go and tell them without being sent? That is why the Scriptures say, “How beautiful are the feet of messengers who bring good news!”
If you keep something, that’s all you’re ever going to have. But if you take what you have and you give it, it turns into seed which when planted in good soil, God can multiply it.
Jesus’ last words to His disciples were, (Matthew 16:15) “Go into all the world and preach the Good News to everyone.” There is no “Plan B”, we are it. Wake up and look around, see what God is doing and find your place in it. It’s not all up to you, He has already done the work, we just have to take our place and work the harvest.
Q: Where do you fit in the Body of Christ? What role are you called to play? How does your role fit in the harvest?
